That Painter From Juno

McPherson is creating some distance from her punk-rock roots even as she brings her cool-kid, comic-book edge to the gallery scene. Mr. LeVine, the gallerist, has been tracking Ms. McPherson's progress since she graduated from college. Artists with a rogue, street-art aesthetic like Ms. McPherson, he thinks, are breaking new ground between commercial illustration and fine art. Walking the path worn by artists like Art Spiegelman and even the Sotheby's street-art favorite Banksy, Ms. McPherson is one of the subculture-inspired punks currently making inroads to the still-stuffy art world.

“I grew up on TV, skateboarding, punk rock, tattoo, all this stuff that just gets incorporated into this kind of art," Mr. LeVine explained. Growing up in Trenton, N.J., in the 80's, he was a punk kid who collected comic books, record jackets and posters.

Prep basketball: Salisbury 57, Monroe 48

MONROE — Salisbury's coaches, more so than the players, understand the significance of a second-round win.

Brandon Abel had 18 points and nine rebounds to lead the Hornets to a 57-48 road victory against Monroe, the Rocky River Conference's top seed, in a 2A boys sectional semifinal Thursday night. Abel scored 12 second-half points and Ibn Ali posted seven of his 11 points in the fourth quarter as Salisbury secured back-to-back playoff wins for the first time since 1994.

Assistant coach Marvin Dixon was the second-leading scorer on that Salisbury team, which fell in a sectional final. Head coach Jason Causby was a West Rowan reserve that same season, and the Falcons prevailed in a sectional final before losing in a regional semifinal.

"That's dating it there," Causby said.

Lutherans and learning

With preparations signed, sealed and delivered, students at Immanuel Lutheran School in Twin Falls and Clover Trinity Lutheran School west of Filer are more than ready to begin their annual celebration of National Lutheran Schools Week. The yearly event is part of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod's recognition of Christian-based involvement in schooling dating back to the mid-1830s.This year, some 2,569 schools nationwide have set aside the week of March 3-7 to honor their long-established commitment to education. With the community in mind, daily themes are aimed at incorporating joy with learning as the two area schools set into motion their separate, week-long agendas, packed with activities. Both kickoff ceremonies are scheduled to begin Monday morning at regular school hours. And at Immanuel Lutheran, 6-year-old Trajan Holtzen is ready.Day one is "Bring your favorite stuffed animal to school day." And on that day, Buddy will be dressed appropriately."I'll dress him up like a vet.

Growing Up to Prozac: Drug makes new neurons mature faster

Peter Pan won't be pleased to hear the latest theory about how Prozac works. A new study shows that the antidepressant stimulates growth of neurons in the hippocampus and speeds the young brain cells toward maturity. The maturation process could be the mechanism by which the drug relieves depression.

Fluoxetine, the drug commonly known as Prozac, has been used to treat depression since the 1980s. Prozac and other SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) block the ability of the neurons to take up serotonin, thereby raising levels of the active neurotransmitter in the brain. When people with depression begin taking such drugs, serotonin levels in the brain increase rapidly, but it often takes 2 to 4 weeks before they begin to feel better.

The new study, published Feb. 6 in the Journal of Neuroscience, suggests that the lag is due to the time it takes for serotonin to stimulate new neurons to grow, mature, and integrate into brain circuits.

How bad? Historically so!

Do you people even watch the games? We held a team averaging 75 a game to 51 AT THEIR PLACE. I realize this is all going to fall on deaf/ignorant ears, but I at least want to inform some of the people who don't watch the games how idiotic some of this stuff is getting.

Might Some Women Boycott Elections if Hillary Loses the Nomination?

I'd make some snarky comment about your being a noob, but I know better. If it didn't cross your mind, then you must post without reading anything, for all political sites are rife with this attitude. Should you have any doubts, please feel free to look back over the anti-Mormom Romney bashing that occurred on this very site. What '-ist" would that be, I wonder.

The really interesting thing about this poll, is the number of selections of the non-answer answer :o). Unless you believe there is one and only one person in the entire US that will not vote if Hillary is not the nominee, and that person is wavering, then the 'maybe' choice has no meaning. If you think even one single person will sit out, then the answer must be yes; only if you conclude that not a single person will sit out can you vote no.

Mall Gunman Admitted He was Satanic, Attempted Suicide

OMAHA, Neb. — The teen gunman who killed eight people and himself in a mall this month once told social workers he was satanic and acknowledged that he often acted before thinking of the consequences, according to newly released court records.

Robert Hawkins' file includes hundreds of pages of court transcripts, drug tests and letters from caseworkers, therapists and family members. They give the clearest picture yet of a young man who told a therapist in April 2005 that "he is not sure if there is a God or life after death and that when he dies, he'll probably go to hell."

More than two years later, on Dec. 5, the 19-year-old Hawkins walked into a department store in the Westroads Mall and shot 11 people, then committed suicide.

G.I. JOE, JUSTICE LEAGUE, WOLVERINE: FEBRUARY 6TH COMIC REEL WRAP

Concept artist Daniel James Cox has a post on his blog about the delays in the production. He wrote, "It's unfortunate, but the Writer's strike has delayed further pre-production on the 'Justice League' movie (i was working on it as a concept artist/illustrator) until later in the year. As a comic fan, i'm happy because the script does need another rewrite. However, the art dept has been doing some amazing artwork, so the team and I will all assemble back at Fox Studios in June/July to pick up where we left off!"

Fight choreographer Richard Norton also posted on his website about the same topic. "Well, just received word that 'Justice League of America' movie has been pushed back until July," Norton wrote, "which technically means I am unemployed, again! Hah, what a business I am in."

X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE

At least one of two women has been chosen to cobble together clothes for the Canucklehead.

TV drama 'Quarterlife' is 100 percent self-absorbed

The drama quarterlife premiered on the Internet before jumping to NBC tonight. Jumping, however, is too positive a term. Skidding is more appropriate.

This little pipsqueak of a show doesn't deserve the wider forum of broadcasting. But that's what it will gain at 10 o'clock on WESH-Channel 2 and in its regular time slot at 9 p.m. Sundays, starting this weekend.

The series comes from executive producers Marshall Herskovitz and Edward Zwick, who have a notable track record. Their ground-breaking thirtysomething wowed or annoyed viewers. The duo later delivered the tender dramas My So-Called Life and Once and Again.

Churchill and cannibals

Mark Henderson, managing director of Savile Row tailoring house Gieves & Hawkes, telephones to say that Robert Gieve – patriarch and living archive of the companies founded in 1785 and 1771 respectively – is unwell. As the fifth generation of the Gieve family, “Mr Robert" is something of a legend. He has researched his family's life in bespoke tailoring and was planning to crown a life spent on Savile Row by curating an archive room in the company's magnificent townhouse at No 1 Savile Row, but time is running out. Will I assist Mr Robert? Do tux shirts look better with studs?

Savile Row had, until recently, been cavalier with its heritage: selling old patterns for scrap paper, off-loading antique uniforms at auction houses and giving up many treasures to museums. In 1940 during the Blitz, when Gieves Ltd was at 21 Old Bond Street, it suffered a direct hit and the company's historic ledgers and Nelson relics turned to ashes.
