Evil burnt, govt-Cong bitterness remains

To register their protest, Congress workers burnt the effigy of Ravana on the main Amritsar-Attari road after they were not allowed by the BJP workers to carry the effigies of the three demons inside the venue. Portions of one of the effigies were also damaged when the Congress workers tried to smuggle it into the venue from the second entrance but were pushed back.

A Congress leader alleged that the district administration had assured them that both parties would jointly organise the show. However, the said change of stance of the district administration at the eleventh hour infuriated the Congress, which boycotted the function, alleging that it had been hijacked by the ruling SAD-BJP alliance. Timely intervention by Congress MLA O.P. Soni pacified the crowd of Congress supporters, some of whom appeared ready to barge into the Dussehra ground with sticks and rods.

U.S. Economic Prosperity Is Being Hijacked By 'Apostles Of Denial'

BY RICHARD McCORMACK

U.S. policy makers are beholden to "apostles of denial," and are not addressing the realities of a U.S. economy that is in long-term decline due to the loss of leadership in technology, according to the chief economist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

"Unfortunately, while trends indicating declining competitive positions have been identified and proclaimed by an increasing number of analysts, they nevertheless continue to be rejected or minimized by an even larger number of other analysts or policy makers," writes NIST senior economist Gregory Tassey in a book entitled, "The Technology Imperative."

The apostles of denial are "befuddling" the debate and are blocking an effective U.S.

Candidates to talk fish at conference

Maybe it will make the court nervous about favoring big business over doing what's right."

Smith believes implications of the Supreme Court decision go well beyond a settlement with Alaska fishermen, and pose a threat to the Clean Water Act.

"If Exxon gets a ruling that they are not responsible and don't have to pay punitive damages, it does not speak well for our waters all over the world. If there is no downside to being careless, then why spend the money to be careful?" Smith said.

According to CDFU Director Rochelle Van den Broek, Gov. Palin was slated to speak about the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., from 10 a.m. 11 a.m. on Feb. 26. That was to be followed by a candlelight vigil on the National Mall starting at 6 p.m.

"This is our last big shot to maybe influence the decision that will be made," Van den Broek said.

Body language analyst breaks down Clemens, McNamee performances

And right from the beginning of Wednesday's hearing, when Clemens and McNamee raised their right hands to be sworn in, Driver started noticing hot spots with Clemens.

Driver first noticed the pitcher pull his right thumb into his hand while he was being sworn. She said that noted jury consultant Jo Ellen Demetrius, who helped pick the jury for the original O.J. Simpson trial, has a theory that whenever somebody sticks their thumb in while being sworn in, he or she will be a difficult witness.

"If you're going to tell the truth your thumb and your hand are open and relaxed," Driver said. "When you're controlling what you're going to say, your thumb might be tense. And Roger's thumb is tense."

She went back and played the swearing in again and found more hot spots with Clemens.

Rare tomes fetch big price

Half a million volumes have poured in for the 11th annual Times Colonist Book Drive and Sale, whetting the appetite of would-be treasure hunters on the lookout for rare, signed or first-edition books.

To check out how much old books can be worth, we visited Victoria-based AbeBooks.com -- the world's largest Internet site for used books -- for its priciest books.

For the record, the most expensive book ever purchased by a Victorian on the AbeBooks website was David Thompson's Narrative of his Explorations in Western America, 1784-1812 by David Thompson (edited by Joseph Burr Tyrell), printed in Toronto by the Champlain Society in 1916 and sold for $4,250 US, says AbeBooks.com spokesman Scott Lyman.

The songs and the passions are overheated

The MFA is playing an excellent documentary about the avant-garde performance artist Jack Smith. And if you run you might be able to catch Richard Kelly's post-apocalyptic distress signal, "Southland Tales," before it vanishes. Otherwise, there's "Romance & Cigarettes," John Turturro's gonzo musical, which opens today.

The movie is actually more than some musical. It feels intensely personal, but Turturro, directing with abandon, uses volume and pulpy craziness to disarm you. How does anybody resist a movie that asks you to believe Elaine Stritch gave birth to James Gandolfini, or that Barbara Sukowa sings in a gospel choir? The songs are hand-me-down forgotten treasures and classics (James Brown's "Hot Pants," Vikki Carr's "It Must Be Him") that play while the actors sing over them.

Nolan's hat trick lifts Flames past Sharks

Owen Nolan recorded his 11th career hat trick as the Calgary Flames held off the San Jose Sharks, 5-4, at Pengrowth Saddledome.

It was Nolan's first three-goal game since October 4, 1999 versus Chicago.

Wayne Primeau and Dion Phaneuf also scored for the Flames, winners of four straight. Alex Tanguay and Craig Conroy each added a pair of assists, while Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 27 shots for Calgary, which had not played since last Tuesday, when it beat Minnesota 2-1.

Patrick Marleau, Tomas Plihal, Patrick Rissmiller and Jonathan Cheechoo all lit the lamp for the Sharks, who had a three-game winning streak snapped. Sandis Ozolinsh added two assists and Evgeni Nabokov turned aside 24-of-29 shots in defeat.

Already down 4-1 early in the third period, Plihal helped the Sharks pull within two as he knocked home a loose puck that fell behind Kiprusoff at the 2:44 mark.

Concerns were raised over E.coli butcher hygiene

SERIOUS concerns about hygiene practices at the butcher's factory which caused the deadly E.coli outbreak were raised more than six months before the first children became ill.

The E.coli public inquiry today heard that environmental health officers from Bridgend Council, who inspected John Tudor and Son's premises in Bridgend Industrial Estate five times in 2005, recorded problems with key equipment used to prepare cooked and raw meats.

The source of the 2005 outbreak, which infected more than 150 people in the South Wales valleys and killed five-year-old school pupil Mason Jones, was traced to E.coli-contaminated cooked and sliced meats supplied to schools.

William Tudor, who owned the family company, pleaded guilty to supplying the infected meat products and breaching food hygiene laws and was jailed for 12 months in September 2007.
