Attack of the flirt-bots

Bummer. Wasn't artificial intelligence (AI) supposed to be more, well, ominous? Like the rogue Skynet system in Terminator, or Agent Smith in The Matrix. Something that at least threatened humanity with extinction. Something, you know, impressive. Instead we get ... "flirt-bots."

Computer security watchdogs are warning about a new type of artificial intelligence software coming out of the extensive Russian hacker networks. It's a "bot" or robot program called "CyberLover," designed to dynamically interact with people through Internet chat rooms and dating Web sites.

Online colonel seemed like a catch

Wendy McKay thought she had met someone special when the Marine colonel deployed to Iraq started chatting with her on the online dating Web site.

Someone claiming to be Col. Richard Bartch told her he was in Iraq for the first time after volunteering for duty. And like her, he was divorced. Chats quickly led to e-mails and within a day he sent her photos of himself in uniform.

In one, he stood in his woodland digital-patterned utilities, proudly holding up his Bronze Star citation and medal. In another, he's lounging in desert cammies in a chair, with his service pistol holster pulled taut across his broad shoulders just next to his name tape.

His e-mails were romantic, echoing the sentiment of a schmaltzy Hallmark greeting card: "I went to sleep last night with a smile because I knew I'd be dreaming of you ...

Diamond Mogul Receives Angry Valentine

JDate users scouring the Jewish dating Web site in anticipation of Valentine's Day may have found a surprising match.

Lev Leviev, the controversial Israeli diamond mogul, had appeared to register a profile on the site, including such information as, “in my free time, I enjoy: Exploitation, Profiteering, Union-Busting, and Macrame."

The JDate profile was one of several recent Valentine's Day-themed acts of protest directed at Leviev, who in reality is not looking for love online but is a married father of nine and an active member of the Chabad-Lubavitch sect of Orthodox Judaism. His detractors oppose his use of diamond mines in Angola and what they say is his extensive involvement in housing construction for Jewish settlers on the West Bank.

“Because a great deal of jewelry shopping goes on during the weekend before Valentine's Day, we thought it was appropriate to reach out to Valentine's Day shoppers and encourage them to stay away from Leviev's shop," said Issa Mikel, a human rights activist who works with Adalah-NY, a coalition of organizations strongly critical of Israeli policy.

NJ sex offenders banned from online socializing

The state Parole Board today banned the 4,400 registered sex offenders it supervises from using social networking Web sites, chat rooms and online dating services as a way to prevent them from possibly luring victims into real-world danger.

The move comes after a state investigation into 268 New Jersey registered sex offenders found that using the site MySpace.com led to only two offenders being punished because existing state rules only banned those who used a computer to commit a sex crime from visiting such sites.

"The protection of all of our citizens and particularly our young people makes the imposition of this new restriction critical," state Parole Board Chairman Peter Barnes said after the board unanimously approved the ban.

Sex offenders will still be allowed to visit other Internet sites as well as use e-mail.

Equestrian-Network's Community Drastically Affects Lives One Member at ...

AUSTIN, Texas, Aug. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- If you think EquestrianSingles.com is just another dating site, think again. When Teresa Lonadier, aka Dakota123, discovered EquestrianSingles.com in 2002, her world changed. Born with half a heart, and not expected to live, Teresa remained housebound and became a regular in EquestrianSingles.com's chatrooms. Embraced by members who fondly referred to her as "Little Sis," the website became her social life.

In 2004, Teresa's parents drove her to an EquestrianSingles.com gathering to meet her new friends in person. A huge rodeo fan, Teresa was overjoyed when PBR bullfighter, Brian Payne, asked her to dance. Teresa had a smile on her face the size of Texas, and told him it was the first time a boy had ever asked her to dance.

Teresa was admitted to the hospital in June 2007 for heart surgery.

As an added benefit, Gigablast is implementing the most privacy-conscious personal data policy of the major search engines.

Online dating site offers DNA matching

AN online dating website that compares the DNA of its customers promises a more satisfying sex life and healthier children for couples who are genetically matched.

Scientific Match helps singles find their "genetic match" by analysing their DNA and recommending a partner who has different immune system genes than themselves for a subscription fee of $US1995 ($2323) per year.

"Welcome to a new era of human relationships. We're the only introduction service that creates matches with actual physical chemistry," the website's homepage says.

After signing up to the website, clients are sent a DNA collection kit containing cheek-swabs and a pre-paid return envelope. Their saliva samples are then processed and they are matched with other users whose genetic profiles are different to their own.
