Weston hike explores human activity

The New Canaan Nature Center has scheduled a hike in Devil's Den in Weston for Saturday, March 8. Participants will search for signs of human activity dating back thousands of years. Volunteer guide Al Noe of Weston will lead hikers through the natural beauty of The Den to see evidence of the semi-nomadic Native Americans who once called the area home. The hike features a 3.3-mile hike that includes a vista from Deer Knoll, examination of the mechanical remains of a portable sawmill, a Native American shelter site, Godfrey Pond and the ruins of a water powered sawmill, and a charcoal-making site. Depending on the amount of interest at each site, this moderate hike should be completed in two to two-and-a-half hours. Mr. Noe has been leading hikes for adults and school groups at Devil's Den for more than six years.

Fraud victim? Banks clash over blame

I want to nail one myth: it is not impossible to go to the police to report an incident. An individual is still entitled to go to the police, but the first port of call would normally be the financial institution.'

The Government is currently in the process of establishing a national fraud reporting centre, which will investigate any incidences of under-reported card crime.

Official statistics indicate that the majority of people still contact their bank about card crime rather than the police. There were 59,000 cases of bank fraud reported to police in 200607, but nearly 2.3m reported to Apacs during the same period.

Have you had your bank account or credit card defrauded? Did you contact your bank, your local police station or both and were you happy with their response? Please e-mail alan.o'sullivan@thisismoney.co.uk with your story.

Tiger passes Arnie, wins 6th in a row

MARANA, Ariz. - What's left for Tiger Woods? Win every tournament he plays? He's off to a perfect start to 2008 (3-for-3) after his Sunday stroll-in-the desert wipeout of Stewart Cink that won the $8 million Accenture Match Play Championship.

The proportions of Woods' 8-and-7 victory are historic, but this is ground he covers casually these days. It's not only the widest margin of victory in the 10-year history of the tournament, but it also moved him past Arnold Palmer on the all-time PGA win list into fourth place with 63 career wins, one behind Ben Hogan. It's also his sixth victory in a row overall, dating back to last season.

The greatest show in golf shows no signs of ending early.

Carmen Kontur-Gronquist loses job as mayor after posing in underwear

ARLINGTON, Ore. - The mayor of an Oregon town who once stripped to her underwear and posed on a fire truck has been stripped of her office.

Voters in this town of about 500 voted narrowly Monday to recall Carmen Kontur-Gronquist. The tally was 142-139. City officials said the recall is effective Tuesday.

Kontur-Gronquist said the pictures of her in black bra and panties were taken for use in a contest about fitness, but a relative posted them on MySpace in hopes it would improve the social life of the single mother.

The Last Word: Sean Paul Causes a Seizure, Akon Plays R. Kelly, and ...

What's cookin' everyone. The weekend is upon us and the news keeps coming. This week proved to be another lively one with Roy Jones getting the W over Felix Trinidad, Hilary Clinton and Barack Obama taking shots at each other as South Carolinians prepare to vote in the Democratic primary, Fred Thompson deading his chances of becoming president by dropping out of the race for the Republican party nomination and a study that counted 935 false statements made by President Bush and top administration officials to justify going to war with Iraq two years after the 2001 terrorists attacks.

Thoughts and prayers go out to the family of actor Heath Ledger, who was found dead Tuesday (Jan. 22) of what many think to be an apparent suicide or accidental drug overdose. Shout out to the sounding boards for staying hot with the feedback, despite all the cold weather sweeping the country.

It's likeable Giants vs. villainous Patriots

What the Giants have done, besides reach the Super Bowl, is put the place of their birth in a whole new light. Everybody pulls for the underdog, and in this game, the Giants are downright Pekingese. Las Vegas already has given its verdict (12 1/2 points). The last time the odds were this steep against a New York team in the Super Bowl was in 1969, and we know how that turned out.

Any groundswell of support for the Giants wouldn't be without merit. There's enough to like about a team that somehow survived this long. We can start with the quarterback, Eli Manning, who never gets too down or up, and managed to withstand the heat that comes with playing quarterback in New York. Then there's the coach, Tom Coughlin, who cracked a smile Sunday for the first time since he was ordered to do so for the team picture.
