Emory’s Burn Book, Online

It's Craiglist on crack, Facebook gone wild.

It features headlines that read “ATO = Gay?", “Dating an Emory Girl VS. Sticking Your Head in a Toilet" and even “The Jews Ruin This School."

Its supporters call it harmless. Its detractors, many of whom have been the subject of defamatory posts, call it slanderous.

It's JuicyCampus.com, and it's the latest — and most controversial — online craze to hit campuses, including Emory's.

The site's premise is simple: Bring middle school-level gossip to the Internet. Juicy Campus is unregulated and anonymous. The site, created by Duke alum Matt Ivester, includes a disclaimer that serves as its guiding principle: “Facts can be untrue. Opinions can be stupid, or ignorant, or mean-spirited, but they can't be untrue.

Anniversary 'cards' for Cook's Corner

My files are full of the recipes she finds and with them is pure Americana. I have ethnic and regional food I would not have had access to otherwise, and the vignettes of family history just add to the experience. Ms. Cicero is a treasure, and we have been fortunate to have had her all this time.

P.A. Kilcoyne, via e-mail

I have enjoyed your column for as long as you have been writing it, and submitted a few recipes that you included a couple of times. With the times a changin', you have remained one of the few constants in life. And yes, that's a good thing, as there are so few.

I wish you another 25 years of continued success. With any luck, I will be around that many to check you out every Thursday morning with coffee.

Sometime in the late 1970s or early '80s, Linda Cicero interviewed my Coral Park High French students, who cooked a grand diner for themselves, teachers, parents, administrators and, on this very special day, The Miami Herald!

Linda and her photographer should know how honored these Latin American immigrants were to be asked their opinions and have their picture taken for an American newspaper.

CSU, East Bay to host Queerfest III

HAYWARD — California State University, East Bay, is holding its third annual Queerfest this week to celebrate and honor the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning community.

The Queerfest III theme is "Come Out Cal State," and the event aims to increase awareness and educate visitors about LGBTQ issues.

"The program gives a voice not only to students, but also faculty and staff belonging to the LGBTQ community," said Heather Thompson, a junior who is president of the Queer-Straight Alliance.

The annual celebration began after the death of Newark transgender teen Gwen Araujo.

In 2002, Araujo was beaten to death at a Newark home after four men learned she was biologically male.

The 17-year-old was born a boy named Edward, but was living life as a female at the time of her death.

Hornets contrive to lose at death

Sad to say but our style (to be polite) has been rumbled and they know how to play against us.Meet our muscular style head on with their biggest defenders and then outplay our alleged midfielders. I believe Boothroyd has coaching abilities but thus far apart from seeing who can hit the floodlights the team seem unable to pass and keep possession. Incidentally welcome back Ken from Swanage (another longtime sufferer like me since 1946!). Roll on 50 points and see what happens then. .

Scene in Baltimore

The ending is happy, and the pages preceding it are invariably touching, funny and surprising.

Other popular Baltimore-based books by Anne Tyler include "Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant" (1982), "Breathing Lessons" (1988), "Saint Maybe" (1991), "Patchwork Planet" (1998) and "Back When We Were Grownups" (2001).

"An American Summer"
Frank Deford
256 pages, 2002

Baltimore native Frank Deford is one of the most versatile contemporary writers. Considered one of the best sports journalists alive, he has also worked as a commentator on NPR's Morning Edition for more than 20 years and published 13 books, including eight novels and a memoir of his daughter's struggle with cystic fibrosis. His most recent fiction work, "An American Summer," portrays the unlikely friendship between a 14-year-old boy and a young woman whose polio-induced paralysis has ended her swimming career.

American Idol Buzz

The reaction when Chris gets voted off is probably the best in Idol history. His confidence melts instantly into shock and anger. Kat's jaw drops to the ground. See the stills and watch the video at this site before Fox pulls it.

A few bloggers complained that the previous link I had included to the Chris departure had gay advertising and such. If that offends you, stick with the youtube.com link above. But in fairness, the original link is a lot clearer so you can check it out here if you choose..

Proving you can find anything on the Web, check this out. Yes, it's Taylor Hicks Pacman and since this was obviously done at least a week ago, Paris, Elliott, Kat and Chris are all chasing him.

Boston a winner for VCA football

It has been a good ten days or so for Boston. First the Red Sox won the World Series, then the Patriots came from behind against the Indy Colts to remain undefeated. Then Valley Christian Academy's running back Adam wins the Northern Santa Barbara County Athletic Round Table male athlete of the week.

"Well this is like a surprise," Adam Boston said after receiving his award, "because our school never really gets anything at all."

Boston ran the ball 15 times for 121 yards and two touchdowns in the Lions 21-12 victory over Sierra Canyon of Granada Hills on Friday night. He also recovered a fumble and returned it 30-yards for the third VCA score.

Athletic director Pete Fortier introduced two football captains, Thomas Stoddard and James Berry. He told a story about Berry.

Border Wall Slashes Through Texas’ Soul

On a Saturday afternoon, I ride my bike through the streets of downtown Brownsville, Texas. I pass old brick storefronts on both sides with boarded second stories and wrought iron balconies, tributes to a city that boomed in the late 19th century. Between streets that bear the names of U.S. presidents - Adams, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe - is a crumbling cemetery with gravestones dating far back into Brownsville's past. The concrete walls are worn to expose rusted rebar, but the cemetery is aflutter with eye-catching fabric flowers, bright as the day they were dyed.I pass through Washington Park and smile, knowing that it will be packed in a few weeks with musicians and fans, that tejano, grupero and mariachi will wail at a three-day party, Charro Days - the South Texas equivalent of Mardis Gras or Carnival.
